Kerala reports over 21,000 new Covid-19 cases: 5 districts driving the surge

With 21,427 people testing positive for the coronavirus disease (Covid-19 in Kerala on Wednesday, the state’s total confirmed cases tally reached 3,745,457, a bulletin from the state government showed. Further, 179 people succumbed to the viral infection, taking the death toll to 19,049.
Of the 14 districts in Kerala, Malappuram reported over 3,000 new Covid-19 cases on Wednesday, while three other districts reported over 2,000 new cases and six districts witnessed more than 1,000 new cases. Only four districts reported under 1,000 new cases on the day, however, there too, the count remained above at least 500, data from the bulletin showed.
After reporting 12,294 cases on Monday (August 16), the state has seen two consecutive days when the single-day tally remained above the 20,000-mark. On Tuesday, it logged 21,613 new cases and 127 fatalities.

As the daily infections in Kerala continue to remain high, here is a look at the districts that are driving the surge.
- Malappuram on Wednesday saw 3,089 new cases, marking the second straight day of over 3,000 cases in the district. The active caseload was recorded at 31,456, the highest among other districts as of day.
- With 2,821 new cases, Kozhikode added the second-most to the state’s single-day tally on Wednesday. It is also the district with the second highest number of active cases with 26,576 infections.
- Ernakulam recorded 2,636 new cases on the day and 24,705 active cases of the disease are present in the district currently, the bulletin showed. After reporting 1,353 new cases on Monday, the district has been seeing over 2,600 new cases for the past two days.
- As many as 2,307 new Covid-19 cases were reported from Thrissur district, where more than 2,000 daily new cases have been reported since August 12, with an exception on August 16, when it saw 1,394 new cases. The district also reported 10,392 active cases of the disease as of Wednesday.
- Palakkad district logged 1,924 new cases on the day while its active caseload stood at 14,533, the fourth highest among all districts in the state.
- The state capital Thiruvananthapuram added 1,163 new cases to the state’s tally on the day and accounts for 10,175 of the total 177,683 active cases in the state.
- Meanwhile, Wayanad became the first district in the state where all eligible beneficiaries were administered the first dose of the vaccine, according to a report by news agency PTI on Monday. The district reported 559 new cases, the lowest among all districts on the day. It also has 6,592 active cases, which have been on the declining trend since a week ago on August 11, when it reported 7,123 active cases.
