2023 Volkswagen ID.4 (VW) Review, Ratings, Specs, Prices, and Photos
What kind of car is the 2023 Volkswagen ID.4? What does it compare to?
The Volkswagen ID.4 is a five-seat electric crossover with two battery pack sizes and two drivetrain options that give shoppers several options when it comes to range and price. Competitors include the Nissan Ariya, Ford Mustang Mach-E, and Hyundai Ioniq 5.
Is the 2023 Volkswagen ID.4 a good car?

Yes. Volkswagen equips it with good standard safety and convenience features. Its overall value and roomy cabin offset an infotainment interface that can be unintuitive and imprecise. It earns a high TCC Rating of 8.0 out of 10. (Read more about how we rate cars.)
What’s new for the 2023 Volkswagen ID.4?
The big news for the 2023 ID.4 is the inclusion of a smaller 62-kwh battery pack with a lower starting price. Production of North American models also shifted from Germany to Tennessee. Minor updates include a standard 12.0-inch touchscreen with an updated navigation system that has charge station routing.
The exterior features new styling colors and wheel designs, black gloss accents, and bumpers redesigned for better aerodynamics. The interior has a larger center console with a larger armrest, and an improved wireless smartphone charger. New options include a lighted rear logo, a memory park feature, and three-zone climate control with heated rear outboard seats.
The base ID.4 Standard has a 201-hp single-motor rear-drive unit powered by a 62-kwh battery pack. It’s neither quick nor slow, but like other ID.4 models it has a solid feel with direct steering and a quiet cabin. With its 209 miles of range, it makes for a fine family commuter. The larger 82-kwh battery pack carries over with a single-motor option and 275 miles of range or dual-motor all-wheel drive, where it makes 295 hp and hustles to 60 mph in 5.4 seconds. The AWD range tops out at 255 miles.
In any configuration, the ID.4 optimizes interior space with heated front seats, roomy rear seats, and up to 64.2 cubic feet of space with the rear seats folded flat. All but the base models come with a fixed glass roof, power adjustable front seats, and a tiered cargo floor for more versatile storage options. The ID.4 lacks a frunk, but has plenty of clever storage pockets.
ID.4 Pro models aced crash testing from the NHTSA and the IIHS, and we expect the smaller-pack models will do the same. Either way, VW equips it with robust driver-assist technology such as standard automatic emergency braking with pedestrian and cyclist detection, blind-spot monitors, and adaptive cruise control. An optional surround-view camera system and parking helper are new this year.
How much does the 2023 Volkswagen ID.4 cost?
The 2023 Volkswagen ID.4 Standard with the smaller 62-kwh battery pack has a starting price of $38,790, including a $1,295 destination fee. It has heated front seats, heated side mirrors, ambient lighting, keyless entry and start, and a smartphone wireless charger. The ID.4 Pro with the 82-kwh pack has the same equipment for $5,000 more. AWD adds $3,800. At the top of the lineup is the Pro S Plus AWD for $55,090.
Where is the 2023 Volkswagen ID.4 made?
By the end of this year, VW will complete its shift of North American production from Germany to Chattanooga, Tennessee.
