It’s an excellent choice overall, with a big cabin, a composed ride, and a spectacular safety record all serving as assets. The Forester rates 6.5 out of 10. (Read more about how we rate cars.)
What’s new for the 2023 Subaru Forester?
The Forester sees no notable tweaks for the 2023 model year.
This boxy crossover SUV is a prior two-time Best Car To Buy winner, and it’s easy to see why. Well, perhaps not because of its styling. The Forester’s chunky, purposeful lines are just fine outside and perhaps a little busy inside. Wilderness models with their beefy fender flares, all-terrain tires, and raised ride height (with up to 9.2 inches of ground clearance) are the most polarizing in the bunch, too.
The 182-hp flat-4 pairs well enough with a CVT for acceptable acceleration and refinement, but that’s not the point here. An impressive 29-mpg combined rating from the EPA—and that’s with standard all-wheel drive—makes the Forester a practical and frugal choice, for what it is. Excellent ride quality and responsive steering make this crossover SUV pleasant enough for day-to-day driving, while plenty of ground clearance helps it take on winter or jaunts into the wilderness with equal confidence.
The big cabin is a masterful use of space. Five passengers can sit in actual comfort, with all their luggage tucked safely behind. Sure, the standard 6.5-inch touchscreen is small, but let’s not get too lost in numbers.
Top safety scores and excellent crash-avoidance tech make the Forester a solid choice for families, too.
How much does the 2023 Subaru Forester cost?
The base Forester runs $27,620 to start with its 6.5-inch touchscreen, Apple CarPlay/Android Auto compatibility, driver-assistance tech, and steel wheels.
We’d spend another $3,000 for the Premium, which adds a big sunroof, a power driver’s seat, heated front seats, alloy wheels, tinted windows, and a bunch of small bits that add up to a nicer driving experience.
Where is the 2023 Subaru Forester made?
In Japan.
