What’s new for the 2023 Ford F-150?

The F-150 adds three new versions for 2023: an off-road model called Rattler, a retro-style model called (appropriately enough) Heritage, and a Raptor R with a 5.2-liter V-8 rated at a staggering 700 hp. 

Offered in regular, extended-, and crew-cab bodies, the F-150 can be outfitted for work duty, family hauling, or as a cowboy Cadillac—or Lincoln, perhaps. The bluff front end wears a proud Ford badge, which gives away to conventional two-box styling from the side. Arguably the most conservatively styled big truck, it’s also the one likely to age the best. 

It’s classy inside, with big optional touchscreens and loads of space. You’ll also find a host of work-ready touches, such as a console workstation and plenty of connectivity.

Aside from the F-150 Lightning EV, which we cover separately, the lineup includes six engine choices. The step-up 2.7-liter turbo-6 blends economy and power perfectly fine for most users, though the 3.5-liter twin-turbo V-6 is a worthwhile (if thirsty) upgrade. Naturally aspirated and supercharged V-8s can also tempt. All models use an automatic transmission and four-wheel drive is a widespread option.

Ride quality impresses, but the solid rear axle with its leaf springs can be bouncy against the Ram’s coils unless you opt for the costly adaptive dampers. 

The F-150 hybrid is even somewhat frugal; look for 25 mpg combined with rear-wheel drive. Most models sit either just above or just below 20 mpg, aside from the 12 mpg Raptor R. Gulp.

The F-150 sells best in crew-cab, short-bed configuration, which is plenty spacious with stretch-out room in the cabin for five. The bed itself can be outfitted with all sorts of steps and mounting points. 

The F-150 boasts good crash-test results in most versions, and the IIHS tends to agree. Ford fits automatic emergency braking across the line. Its trick BlueCruise system can take the edge off for long highway stints, but Ford’s subscription plan could get costly. 

How much does the 2023 Ford F-150 cost?

The F-150 theoretically exists at around $35,500, but that’s for a fleet-oriented model that will probably need to be special-ordered.

An XLT with the crew-cab body, four-wheel drive, and one of the V-6 engines runs in the mid-$50,000 range, or closer to $60,000 with a few options. A loaded-up Limited runs about $90,000.
