2023 Mazda CX-5 Review, Ratings, Specs, Prices, and Photos
What kind of vehicle is the 2023 Mazda CX-5? What does it compare to?
The 2023 Mazda CX-5 is a small SUV that rivals the Honda CR-V, Ford Escape, and Volvo XC40, among others.
Is the 2023 Mazda CX-5 a good SUV?
It’s a solid choice for drivers seeking a stylish ride that delivers sports sedan-grade handling, though a frustrating infotainment system and just-OK fuel economy don’t impress. That’s enough for a 6.3 out of 10 on the TCC scale. (Read more about how we rate cars.)

This small crossover SUV comes in a single body that’s slightly more conservative than the bigger, newer CX-50. A big grille and birds-eye headlights give the CX-5 a distinctive, stylish look outside. Inside, it’s attractive in any configuration and downright luxurious when loaded up to range-topping Signature trim with nappa leather and real wood.
Base CX-5s use a 187-hp inline-4 to shuffle power to all four corners. The optional CX-5 Turbo swaps in a 256-hp engine for far better passing response. On all, the 6-speed automatic transmission does a good job going about its business but dents fuel economy to between 24 and 26 mpg combined. There’s no CX-5 hybrid, which is a shame since some rivals offer upward of 35 mpg combined. No rival is quite as fun to drive in every configuration, though. Balanced handling and sharp steering make the CX-5 the zippiest choice in its segment.
The CX-5 has a comfy enough cabin with bolstered seats that hint at its sporty positioning. Rear-seat riders will find a flat bench, and the cargo area is just average.
We’re also less than impressed with the 10.3-inch touchscreen’s software, though Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility alleviate some of those concerns.
Safety-wise, the CX-5 is a solid choice with its five-star NHTSA rating and IIHS Top Safety Pick+ award. Automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitors, active lane control, and other crash-avoidance features all come standard, too.
How much does the 2023 Mazda CX-5 cost?
The CX-5 lineup starts just under $28,000, which buys 17-inch alloy wheels, a 10.3-inch touchscreen, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility, plenty of safety tech, and cloth seats. We’d spend up for the Select or Preferred trims, which can add heated seats, power adjustment for the driver’s seat, and even leather trim.
Where is the 2023 Mazda CX-5 made?
In Japan.
